On our produce farm, being concerned with sustainable agriculture and sustainable practices is not about being trendy or politically correct – it’s about common sense. It’s identifying and enacting farming practices that allow us to produce safe, high quality, nutritious and affordable food while protecting the land our family has farmed for three generations so it may be farmed for many generations to come. With an ever-growing population, more mouths will need to be fed. Without the use of sustainable farming practices it’s hard to say how feasible feeding these people will be.
Owyhee Produce has always held dear the belief that we must meet the agriculture needs of today without compromising future generations’ ability to farm the land and grow healthy food. It’s our duty to ensure that tomorrow’s farmers are able to efficiently farm, from our sustainable farming practices of today. We are not just a farm, we are a part of the agriculture industry; a family of growers and farmers helping feed the people of the world.
Since environmental sustainability is a part of our farm, we continuously seek out opportunities to make our facilities and processes sustainable – be it through water conservation, waste management practices, to the products we use – we are always interested in opportunities to lessen our environmental impact, while improving the quality of the produce we grow.
Owyhee Produce is committed to leading agriculture and related conversations that build understanding and consensus about important issues facing farmers, consumers, and the ever-evolving food system. Please join our online communities on Twitter, Facebook and our blog to discuss our views on sustainability (or common-sense farming, as we like to call it). We look forward to hearing what you have to say!
