Asparagus is a unique crop that needs years to mature before it can be picked and sold. It’s fairly labor intensive and in recent years, many growers throughout the US have been removing it entirely.
The Froerer family started growing asparagus in the 1990s. Initially, we shipped our asparagus crops up to Washington to be canned. But in 2001, no longer able to can our product, we tried our hand at fresh-packing. With such a large, labor intensive crop just about to peak, we didn’t want our work to be wasted. Thankfully, it was just around this time that Robin Froerer joined our team and took the fresh-packing operations into full swing. By 2003, we had a complete fresh-packing operation up and running. We currently grow 122 acres of hand-planted asparagus across Oregon and Idaho.
We fresh-pack our “Ida-Spears” in Fruitland, ID and ship them to national retail chains across the West. We utilize a “hydrocooler,” a machine that cools the core temperature of each spear, in order to increase shelf life and freshness of our asparagus.
While Owyhee mainly sells in bulk to wholesalers, the local packing facility is also open for the public to walk in and buy farm-fresh asparagus daily. Not only do buyers leave with extremely fresh produce, but they are able to see the unique, behind-the-scenes process of how Owyhee’s Ida-Spears are taken from the field, to the packing line, to the truck to be shipped.
